The author investigates a three-dimensional slow-fast system with a one-dimensional slow variable and the property that there exist fold points, where the Jacobian of the fast system has a double zero eigenvalue (Bogdanov-Takens fold point). \(\delta\) is an additional parameter controlling the strength of the stability of the critical manifold. The main results of the paper are a construction of the transition map near the Bogdanov-Takens fold point by a blow up technique which leads to the first Painlevé equation and the existence of a stable periodic orbit (relaxation oscillation) for sufficiently small \(\varepsilon>0\) and fixed \(\delta\). For \(\varepsilon\gg \delta>0\), the author proves the existence of a chaotic invariant set.
