Let \(\mathcal M\) be a properly infinite semifinite factor with unit \(I\). A self-adjoint operator \(D\in\mathcal M\) is called diagonal if there exist a sequence of real numbers \(\{\lambda_k\}_{k\geq 1}\) and a sequence of orthogonal projections \(\{P_k\}_{k\geq 1}\) in \(\mathcal M\) such that \(\sum_{k\geq1}P_k=I\) and \(D=\sum_{k\geq1}\lambda_kP_k\). For any \(n\geq 1\), an \(n\)-tuple of commuting self-adjoint operators \(\{\delta(i)\}_{i=1}^n\) in \(\mathcal M^n\) is said to be a diagonal \(n\)-tuple if there exist a sequence of real numbers \(\{\lambda_{i,k}\}_{k\geq 1}\) for each \(1\leq i\leq n\) and a sequence of pairwise orthogonal projections \(\{P_k\}_{k\geq 1}\) in \(\mathcal M\) such that \(\sum_{k\geq1}P_k=I\) and \(\delta(i)=\sum_{k\geq1}\delta_{i,k}P_k\), \(1\leq i\leq n\). For any \(1\leq p_i<\infty\) such that \(\sum_{i=1}^n\frac1{p_i}\leq 1\), let \(L_{p_i,1}(\mathcal M)\) be a Lorentz \((p_i,1)\)-ideal of \(\mathcal M\). In the present paper, the authors prove that, if the spectral measure of a commuting self-adjoint \(n\)-tuple \(\{\alpha(i)\}_{i=1}^n\) in \(\mathcal M^n\) is singular, then there exists a commuting self-adjoint diagonal \(n\)-tuple \(\{\delta(i)\}_{i=1}^n\) in \(\mathcal M^n\) such that \(\alpha(i)-\delta(i)\in L_{p_i,1}(\mathcal M),\) \(1\leq i\leq n\). Moreover, \[ \max_{1\leq i\leq n}\max\{\|\alpha(i)-\delta(i)\|_{L_{p_i,1}(\mathcal M)},\|\alpha(i)-\delta(i)\|_{\mathcal M}\} \] can be arbitrarily small. This extends an earlier result due to \textit{D. Voiculescu} [J. Oper. Theory 2, 3--37 (1979; Zbl 0446.47003)].
