Tightness of a simplicial complex \(K\) with \(n\) vertices refers to tightness of the canonical embedding into an \((n-1)\)-dimensional simplex. This means that for any closed half space \(H\) the inclusion \(H\cap K\) injects into \(K\) in homology with coefficients in a field \(\mathbb{F}\). This was introduced by the reviewer in [\textit{W. Kühnel}, Tight polyhedral submanifolds and tight triangulations. Berlin: Springer-Verlag (1995; Zbl 0834.53004)]. On the other hand the Stanley-Reisner ring \(\mathbb{F}(K)\) is a purely algebraic object associated with \(K\) with one generator for every vertex of \(K\). The main result of the present article states: For triangulated 3-manifolds the notion of \(\mathbb{F}\)-tightness is equivalent to \(\mathbb{F}\)-Golodness of \(\mathbb{F}(K)\). The latter is a purely algebraic property defined in terms of the Massey products in the Koszul homology. In a recent preprint the authors extend this to manifolds of arbitrary dimension, see [the authors, ``Tight complexes are Golod'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:2302.02532}].
