Let \(R\subseteq S\) be a ring extension, and let \([R,S]\) be the set of \(R\)-subalgebras of \(S\). If each chain in \([R,S]\) is finite (equivalently, if \([R,S]\) has both the ascending and descending chain conditions) then \(R\subseteq S\) is called an \textit{FCP extension}. In this paper, the authors generalize the notion of factorization of a ring extension by saying that \(R\subseteq S\) \textit{split} at \(T\in[R,S]\) if the supports of \(T/R\) and \(S/R\) (as \(R\)-modules) are disjoint. The authors explores this concept in several types of FCP extensions, for example in Prüfer and almost-Prüfer extensions and in \(\mathcal{B}\)-extensions, and characterize when \(R\subseteq S\) splits at particular intermediate rings, like the integral closure \(\overline{R}\) of \(R\) in \(S\) or the Prüfer hull \(\widetilde{R}\). The final section presents some results on \textit{pinched} extensions, i.e., extensions for which there is a ring \(R\subsetneq T\subsetneq S\) such that every ring in \([R,S]\) is comparable with \(T\).
