The paper considers a hydrodynamic model for a bipolar fluid in a constant temperature ambient which with suitable modifications could be used for describing charge transport in semiconductors. The fundamental variables are the densities, the momenta and the temperatures of the two fluid components. Frictional damping is added to the momenta equations and the fluid components are coupled through the Poisson equation for the self-consistent electric field. The author shows that classical solutions of this model exist globally in time and that there exist time asymptotic states other than the stationary solutions of the unipolar case. Global existence is proved by combining local existence with energy estimates. The asymptotic states are shown to be diffusive waves for the densities, the Darcy's laws for the momenta and the ambient temperature for the temperatures. Algebraic time decay rates of solutions to these asymptotic states are shown. The density and temperature differences and the electric field decay to zero exponentially fast.
