It was conjectured by \textit{W. H. Meeks III} et al., [Adv. Lect. Math. (ALM) 7, 301--380 (2008; Zbl 1154.53009)] that if \((M, g)\) is a closed Riemannian 3-manifold which does not admit any closed, embedded, minimal surface whose two-sided covering is stable, then \(M\) is finitely covered by the \(3\)-sphere. In this paper, the author gives a counterexample to this conjecture. However, if one excludes immersed rather than just embedded surfaces, then the corresponding conjecture turns out to be true.
