The ideal center of a Banach lattice \(E\) consists of all operators \(T\in L(E)\) for which there exist positive numbers \(\lambda\) with \(-\lambda x\leq Tx\leq\lambda x\) for all \(x\geq 0\). It is proved that the natural embedding \(Z(E)\rightarrow Z(E')\) can be extended to a contractive algebra and lattice homomorphism of \(Z(E)''\) into \(Z(E').\) This extension is onto if and only if, for each \(x\in E_{+},\) the closure of \(Z(E)x\) is an ideal in \(E\) (for example, this is the case when \(E\) is \(\sigma\)-Dedekind complete and has a quasi-interior point). This result can be generalized to the framework of Archimedean Riesz spaces \(E\) with a point separating order dual \(E^{\sim}\). If \(i:Z(E)\rightarrow L_{b}(E)\) is the natural embedding of the ideal center of \(E\) into the space of order bounded operators on \(E\), then the image of the Arens extension \(i^{\sim}:Z(E)''\rightarrow L_{b}(E^{\sim})\) is \(Z(E^{\sim})\) if and only if, for each \(x\in E_{+},\) the weak closure of \(Z(E)x\) is an ideal.
