The paper is concerned with a coupled local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG)-continuous finite element method (CFEM) for solving singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problems. The authors also analyze the stability of the method and uniform convergence property on a Shishkin mesh. For linear elements, the rate \(O(N^{-1}\ln N)\) in an associated norm is established. The numerical experiments developed in the paper indicate the sharpness of this error estimate. Moreover, the rate \(O(N^{-2}\ln^2 N)\) in a discrete \(L^\infty\) norm, and \(O(N^{-2})\) in \(L^2\) norm are numerically observed on the Shishkin mesh. The authors only consider one-dimensional problems, but the approach of coupling LDG and FEM also can be applied to higher-dimensional problems.
