The paper under review is devoted to the study of the following problem. Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be separable Banach spaces and \(T: X \to Y\) be an operator such that the dual operator \(T^*\) has non-separable range. What kind of fixing properties does the operator \(T\) have? To state the results, the author uses the concept of sequence topologically equivalent to the basis of the James tree space, see, for instance, \textit{S. A. Argyros, P. Dodos} and \textit{V. Kanellopoulos} [``A classification of separable Rosenthal compacta and its applications'', Diss. Math. 449 (2008; Zbl 1146.54007)]. By \(2^{< {\mathbb N}}\) we shall denote the Cantor tree. The main results of the paper are as follows. Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be separable Banach spaces and \(T: X \to Y\) be an operator. Theorem 1. Suppose that \(X\) contains no copy of \(l_{1}\), Then the following are equivalent. (a) \(T^{*}:Y^{*} \to X^{*}\) has non-separable range. (b) The operator \(T\) fixes a copy of a sequence topologically equivalent to the basis of the James tree space. Theorem 2. Assume that \(X\) contains a copy of \(l_{1}\). Then the following are equivalent. (a) \(T^{*}:Y^{*} \to X^{*}\) has non-separable range. (b) Either the operator \(T^{*}:Y^{*} \to X^{*}\) fixes a copy of \(l_{1}\) or there exists a bounded sequence \((x_{t})_{t \in 2^{< {\mathbb N}}}\) in \(X\) such that itself and its image \((T(x_{t}))_{t \in 2^{< {\mathbb N}}}\) are topologically equivalent to the basis of the James tree space.
