The contents of this expository paper after 0. Introduction is as follows. 1. Preliminaries on proper actions; 2. Proper actions and \(C^*\)-algebra bundles; 3. The Mackey-Rieffel-Green theorem for proper actions; 4. The spectrum of crossed products of the \(C^*\)-algebra of continuous functions on a locally compact Hausdorff space by proper actions of a locally compact group; 5. K-theory of proper actions. Its goal is to provide a readable synopsis about the crossed products by proper actions of locally compact groups and their K-theory. Given are detailed discussions on both the bundle structure of the crossed products and the natural bijection between the primitive ideal space of the crossed products and the quotient space of the certain bundles over the spaces of orbits with fibers the unitary duals of the stabilizers by actions, which can be a homeomorphism for a naturally defined topology on the bundles if the actions satisfy the Palais slice property of \textit{R. S. Palais} [Ann. Math. (2) 73, 295--323 (1961; Zbl 0103.01802)]. Given also is a proof of a result due to \textit{P. Baum} and \textit{A. Connes} on K-theory for crossed products by actions of finite groups [in: A fête of topology, Pap. Dedic. Itiro Tamura, 163--232 (1988; Zbl 0656.55005)].
