Seeking for a converse to a well-known theorem by Borel-Tits, the authors address the question whether the group \(G(k)\) of rational points of an anisotropic reductive \(k\)-group admits a split spherical BN-pair. They prove that if the field \(k\) is perfect or local, then such a pair must be virtually trivial.
