Let \(G\) be a locally compact group with identity \(e\) and a right Haar measure \(\lambda\), and let \(L^p(G)\) be the complex Lebesgue space with respect to \(\lambda\), for \(1\leq p<\infty\). Let \(T_{a,w}:L^p(G)\rightarrow L^p(G)\) be defined as \(T_{a,w}(f)=wT_a(f)\), where \(w\) is a positive bounded continuous function on \(G\) and \(T_a(f)=f*\delta_a\) for \(a\in G\), \(f\in L^p(G)\). An element \(a\in G\) is called \textit{periodic} if the closed semigroup \(G(a)\) generated by \(a\) is compact, and \textit{aperidodic} if not. For \(a\) aperiodic in \(G\), the chaos of the operators \(T_{a,w}\) is characterized just with the density of the set of periodic points for \(T_{a,w}\), and also in terms of some computable conditions on the weight function \(w\). The present results can be compared with the characterization of hypercyclicity in this same setting provided by the author and \textit{C.-H. Chu} in [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 139, No. 8, 2839--2846 (2011; Zbl 1221.47017)].
