    The paper deals with the initial-value problem to the for the generalized Benjamin-Ono equation \(u_{t}+\frac {1}{\pi }\operatorname {pv}(\frac {1}{x}\ast u_{xx})\pm u^{k}u_{x}=0\) in the Sobolev space \(H^{s}(\mathbb {R})\) without smallness of the initial data \(u_0.\) The author improves the results obtained by \textit{L. Molinet} and \textit{F. Ribaud} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2004, No. 70, 3757--3795 (2004; Zbl 1064.35149)]. He proves existence of the unique solution \(u\in \mathcal {C}([0,T];H^{s}(\mathbb {R}))\) of the above problem such that the norms \(\| D_{x}^{s+1/2}u\| _{L_{x}^{\infty }L_{t}^{2}}\) and \(\| D_{x}^{s-1/4}u\| _{L_{x}^{4}L_{t}^{\infty }}\) are finite, where \( k\geq 12\), \(s>\frac {1}{2}-\frac {1}{k}\) and \(T=T(s,k,\| u_0\| _{H^s})\). Moreover, ill-posedness of the problem in \(H^{s}(\mathbb {R})\) for \(k=3\) and \(s<\frac {1}{3}\) is shown.
