The paper is devoted to a study of the question when a couple \(\bigl( L_1(\mu), Y \bigr)\) has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property (BPBP, for short), where \(\mu\) is a \(\sigma\)-finite measure and \(Y\) is a Banach space. Recall two definitions of M.~Acosta, R.~Aron, D.~Garcıa and M.~Maestre. Given Banach spaces \(X,Y\), let \(\mathcal L(X,Y)\) denote the Banach space of all linear bounded operators from \(X\) to \(Y\), \(S_X\) the unit sphere and \(B_X\) the closed unit ball of \(X\). A couple \((X,Y)\) of Banach spaces is said to have the BPBP if for every \(\varepsilon > 0\) there are \(\beta, \eta > 0\) with \(\beta \to 0\) as \(\varepsilon \to 0\) such that for every \(T \in S_{\mathcal L(X,Y)}\) and every \(x_0 \in S_X\) the inequality \(\|Tx_0\| > 1 - \eta\) yields the existence of \(u_0 \in S_X\) and \(S \in S_{\mathcal L(X,Y)}\) with the properties \(\|Su_0\| = 1\), \(\|x_0 - u_0\| < \beta\) and \(\|T - S\| < \varepsilon\). A Banach space \(X\) is said to have the approximate hyperplane series property (AHSP, for short) if for each \(\varepsilon > 0\) there exists \(\eta \in (0, \varepsilon)\) such that for every sequence \((x_k)\) from \(S_X\) and every convex series \(\sum_{k=1}^\infty a_k\) with \(\bigl\| \sum_{k=1}^\infty a_k x_k \bigr\| > 1 - \eta\) there exist a subset \(A \subseteq \mathbb N\), a subset \(\{z_k: \, k \in A\} \subset S_X\) and \(x^* \in S_{X^*}\) such that \(\sum_{k \in A} a_k > 1 - \varepsilon\), \(\|z_k - x_k\| < \varepsilon\) and \(x^*(z_k) = 1\) for all \(k \in A\). In the paper under the review, it is proved that if \(\bigl(L_1(\mu), Y \bigr)\) has the BPBP then \(Y\) possesses the AHSP. If, moreover, \(Y\) has the Radon-Nikodým property then the converse is also true.
