This paper concerns the question whether, for a field \(k\) of positive characteristic \(p\), every twisted form of \(\mu_p\) over \(k\) occurs as subgroup scheme of an elliptic curve over \(k\). The author proves that the question has a positive answer if \(k\) is (i) a finite field with \(p^n\) element such that \(p\leq 17\) or \(n\geq 2\), or (ii) a field of the form \(K((t))\), or (iii) of characteristic \(p\leq 11\). To prove this, he employs Honda-Tate theory for (i), Igusa's result on Hasse invariants of semi-universal deformations of supersingular elliptic curves for (ii), and some straightforward computations with Hasse invariants for (iii). Conversely he also shows that the question has a negative answer if \(k\) is (i) a prime field \(\mathbb{F}_p\) with \(p\geq 19\), or (ii) of the form \(K(t)\) with \(p\geq 13\).
