Suppose that \(\varphi\) is an analytic self-map of the unit disk \(D\) and \[ \varphi^*(e^{it})=\lim_{r\to1^-}\varphi(re^{it}) \] is the radial limit function of \(\varphi\). The function \(\varphi^*\) maps the unit circle \(T\) to the closed unit disk \(\overline D\). Let \(m_\varphi\) denote the pullback measure on \(\overline D\) of the Lebesgue measure on \(T\) induced by \(\varphi^*\). The function \[ N_\varphi(w)=\sum_{\varphi(z)=w}\log{1\over |z|},\qquad w\in D, \] is called the Nevanlinna counting function of \(\varphi\). For any real \(\theta\) and \(h\in(0,1)\), the set \[ S(\theta,h)=\{re^{it}:1-h<r<1,|\theta-t|<h\} \] is called a Carleson box at \(e^{i\theta}\in T\). Let \[ \rho_\varphi(h)=\sup_\theta m_\varphi(S(\theta,h)). \] The main result of the paper asserts that there exists a positive constant \(C>1\) such that, for any analytic self-map \(\varphi\) of the unit disk, we have \[ (1/C)\rho_\varphi(h/C)\leq\sup\left\{N_\varphi(w):1-h\leq|w|<1\right\}\leq C\rho_\varphi(Ch), \] where \(0<h\leq(1-|\varphi(0)|)/C\). As consequences of the above estimate, one easily recovers several previously known results about composition operators on the Hardy space, including the characterization of compact composition operators and composition operators belonging to Schatten classes.
