This paper is a report on Stechkin's classical results on direct and inverse theorems in the theory of approximation of periodic functions. In preparing this report the author followed the approach of explaining what was known before Stechkin, then recounting what Stechkin did, and finally describing what was done after him and what, in the author's opinion, should be done next. Stechkin worked on spaces of continuous functions only. The author's presentation deals with the whole range of spaces \(L_p\), \(0 \leq p \leq \infty\), but does not deal with results on derivatives and conjugate functions.
