The author presents the long journey from special to general relativity from today's point of view. Starting from the creation of special relativity in 1905 he carefully looks into Einstein's papers from 1906 to 1914 to show, which parts of the general theory from 1915 are already developed before that year. The key results are: The equality of inertial and gravitational mass has already been detected in 1907, and the non-Euclidean nature of space-time in 1912. The Zurich Notebook, covering 96 pages, plays an essential role in understanding the process Einstein followed in his deduction. According to footnote 1 of the paper, this paper represents a new version of an article published in 2010.
