This paper is devoted to the problem of the well-posedness of the periodic fractional integro-differential equation \[ D^\alpha u(t) = A u(t) + \int_{-\infty}^t a(t-s) Au(s) ds + f(t),\quad -\infty < t < \infty. \leqno(*) \] Here \(u\) and \(f\) are \(2\pi\)-periodic functions with values in a Banach space \(X\), \(D^\alpha\) stands for a fractional derivative of order \(\alpha > 0\), \(A\) is a closed operator in \(X\), and \(a\) is a scalar \(L^1\)-function. This equation is said to be \(\mathcal F\)-well-posed, where \(\mathcal F\) is some Banach space of \(X\)-valued \(2\pi\)-periodic \(L^p\)-functions (\(1 \leq p \leq \infty\)), if it is true for every \(f \in \mathcal F\) that (\(*\)) has a unique solution \(u \in \mathcal F\) which is sufficiently smooth, so that all the terms in (\(*\)) are well-defined and belong to \(\mathcal F\). Under suitable conditions on \(\alpha\) and on the Laplace transform of \(a\) a complete characterization is given for the \(\mathcal F\)-well-posedness of (\(*\)) in the cases where \({\mathcal F} = L^p\) or \({\mathcal F} = B^s_{p,q}\) (a periodic Besov space). In these two cases the well-posedness of (\(*\)) turns out not to depend on the values of the parameters \(p\), \(q\), and \(s\). The above result with \(p = q = \infty\) can also be applied to study well-posedness in the space of periodic Hölder continuous functions.
