Let \((G,C)\) be a surface symmetry, so that \(C\) is a closed oriented surface and \(G\) a finite group which acts on \(C\) effectively and preserving orientation. Denote the \(k\)-th Mumford-Morita-Miller classes of \((G,C)\) by \(e_k(G,C)\in H^{2k}(G;\mathbb Z)\). If \(G\) is a cyclic group, a certain kind of periodicity for the classes \(e_k(G,C)\) has been proved in [\textit{T. Uemura}, Hokkaido Math. J. 28, No. 3, 597--611 (1999; Zbl 0946.57031)]. In the paper under review, the author considers arbitrary finite groups, and shows the mod \(p\) reduction of the result: Let \(G\) be a finite group and \(p\) a prime number which divides the order of \(G\). Put \(\mu_p(G):=p^m-p^{m-1}\), where \(p^m\) is the highest power of \(p\) dividing the order of \(G\). Then there exists a cohomology class \(u_G\in H^{2\mu_p(G)}(G;\mathbb F_p)\) such that \(e_{k+\mu_p(G)}(G,C)=e_k(G,C)\cup u_G\in H^{2(k+\mu_p(G))}(G;\mathbb F_p)\) for any surface symmetry \((G,C)\). As an application, the author shows a couple of vanishing results for mod \(p\) Mumford-Morita-Miller classes for surface symmetries.
