The authors describe geometric properties discrete circular and spherical means of directional derivatives. Approximating the directional derivatives by appropriate finite differences, they obtain finite difference operators with good rotational invariance. Discrete circular and spherical means are used to derive discrete approximations of various linear and nonlinear differential operators of first and second order, such as the gradient and the Laplacian. The results are applied to nonlinear diffusion filtering of digital images.
