Suppose that \(G\) is a multiplicative group with identity \(e\), \(H\) is an abelian additive group and \(f:G\to H\) is a map such that \(f(e)=0\). Suppose \(S_1(G, H)\) and \(S_2(G,H)\) are the set of all solutions of the functional equations \(f(xy)+f(xy^{-1})=2f(x)\) and \(f(xy)+f(y^{-1}x)=2f(x)\), respectively. If Hom\((G,H)\) is the set of all homomorphisms from \(G\) to \(H\), then \textit{C. T. Ng} [Aequationes Math. 70, No. 1--2, 131--153 (2005; Zbl 1084.39020); ibid. 62, No. 1--2, 143--159 (2001; Zbl 1004.39018)] proved the equalities Hom\((G,H) =S_1(G, H)\) and Hom\((G,H)=S_2(G,H)\), when \(G\) is the symmetric group \(S_n\) \((n\geq 1)\). In this paper the authors give an elementary and direct proof for the above equalities.
