Let \(M,g\) be a closed Riemannian \(3\)-manifold and let \(n_0\in\mathbb{N}\) a natural number. The author proves that there is a constant \(C\) depending on \(M,g\) and \(n_0\) such that if \(\Sigma_k\) is a sequence of closed embedded minimal surfaces with index less than \(n_0\), then \(\mbox{genus}(\Sigma_k)<C\cdot\mbox{area}(\Sigma_k)\). This proves that the genus can only grow at most linearly with respect to the area.
