Between appropriation and rejection: translating D'Alembert into German, and D'Alembert on translation (Q6604558)

Although d'Alembert's mathematical/scientific work receives brief mention by the authors, their article focuses squarely on d'Alembert as philosopher. This paper discusses the various translations into German, ranging from during d'Alembert's lifetime through 1997, of his philosophical writings, noting the different glosses translators have put on his thoughts. The authors also comment on d'Alembert's own essay on the topic of translation, \textit{Observations sur l'art de traduire.}
