A novel framework for analyzing and developing bound-preserving (BP) central-upwind (CU) schemes for general hyperbolic systems of conservation laws is established. The foundation of this framework is based on the remark that the CU schemes can be decomposed as a convex combination of several intermediate solution states. Consequently, the design of BPCU schemes is simplified to the enforcement of four accessible BP conditions, each of which can be achieved by minor modification to the CU schemes. The proposed framework can be applied to general hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, and as a specific application it is employed to construct provably BPCU schemes for one- and two-dimensional Euler equations of gas dynamics. Some numerical tests are presented to show the robustness and effectiveness of the BPCU schemes.
