James Thomson sen. was the father of William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, but the article under review focuses on the elder Thomson's own career as a mathematician and, in particular, as an author of textbooks. Although, as the article's title suggests, Thomson's work while a professor at the Belfast Academical Institution receives the most attention, McCartney also discusses Thomson's youth and his final years spent at the University of Glasgow. An appendix provides a collection of 36 questions from the April 1825 mathematics examinations at the Institution.\N\NFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1539.01004].
