A polynomial stability condition can be defined on the bounded derived category \({\text D}^{\text b}(X)\) of any normal projective variety \(X\) and consists, roughly, of the heart of a bounded t-structure and a group homomorphism from the Grothendieck group of \(X\) to the abelian group of polynomials over \(\mathbb{C}\). Using this data, one can define (semi-)stable objects. The author considers the case where \(X\) is a smooth projective three-fold and the heart \(\mathcal{A}^p\) consists of objects \(E\) in \({\text D}^{\text b}(X)\) which satisfy a) \(H^k(E)=0\) for \(k\neq 0,-1\), b) \(H^0(E)\) has dimension at most 1 and, lastly, c) \(H^{-1}(E)=M\) is such that \(\Hom(N,M)=0\) for all sheaves \(N\) of dimension at most 1. The group homomorphism is given explicitly and depends, in particular, on the choice of four complex numbers and a (real) ample class. Any polynomial stability condition of this form is called a PT-stability condition and the (semi-)stable objects with respect to it are called PT-(semi-)stable, since the stable objects in \(\mathcal{A}^p\) with \(\text{ch}=(-1,0,\beta,n)\) and trivial determinant are the stable pairs in the sense of \textit{R. Pandharipande} and \textit{R. P. Thomas} [Invent. Math. 178, No. 2, 407--447 (2009; Zbl 1204.14026)]. The first main result of the paper under review is that the set of all PT-semistable objects of any fixed Chern character occurs as the fibres of a family over a finite-type scheme. The second result shows that objects in the heart \(\mathcal{A}^p\) satisfy the valuative criterion for completeness. Lastly, the author also presents a series of results on how to compute cohomology with respect to the t-structure whose heart is \(\mathcal{A}^p\). These results are used in the sequel to the paper under review where the author generalises the technique of semistable reduction from the setting of sheaves to the setting of the derived category, and performs it on flat families of objects in \(\mathcal{A}^p\).
