A kernel \(K(z,w)\) is called a polynomial Nevanlinna kernel if it can be written in the form \[ K(z,w) = \frac{M(z)N(w)^*-N(z)M(w)^*}{z-w^*} \] where \(M\) and \(N\) are \(d\times d\) matrix polynomials such that \(M(z)N(z^*)^*=N(z)M(z^*)^*\) for all complex numbers \(z\) and rank\(\, [M(z_0)\;\;N(z_0)]=d\) for at least one complex number \(z_0\). The main result of the present paper presents necessary and sufficient conditions under which the reproducing kernel \(K(z,w)\) of a Pontryagin space \(\mathcal B\) of \(d\times 1\) vector polynomials is a polynomial Nevanlinna kernel. More precisely, \(K(z,w)\) as above is a polynomial Nevanlinna kernel if and only if the operator \(S\) of multiplication by the independent variable in the Pontryagin space \(\mathcal B\) of \(d\times 1\) vector polynomials is symmetric and there exists a complex number \(\alpha\) such that the range of \(S-\alpha\) equals \({\mathcal B}\cap \text{ker}\, E_\alpha\), where \(E_\alpha\) denotes the operator of evaluation at the point \(\alpha\).
