The paper under review deals with the topological automorphism groups of compact quantum groups. Each compact quantum group in the sense of Woronowicz is determined by the structure of an associated unital Hopf \(*\)-algebra \(A\). The paper considers the group of Hopf \(*\)-algebra automorphisms of \(A\), denoted by \(\Aut(A)\), which is an analogue of automorphism groups of compact groups. The first part of this work concerns the topologization of the group \(\Aut(A)\). The authors show that there is essentially only one reasonable way of topologizing \(\Aut(A)\). Under this topology, one studies two important topological subgroups: the inner automorphisms \(\Aut_\chi (A)\) which preserve the class of each irreducible representation, and the outer automorphisms \(\operatorname{Out}(A)\) given by the quotient of \(\Aut_\chi (A)\). One has an Iwasawa type theorem, that is, \(\Aut_\chi (A)\) and \(\Aut(A)\) share the same connected component of the identity. The theory can be applied to the study of dynamics on compact quantum groups. For instance, the authors show that for any cocompact action of a discrete group on a compact matrix quantum group, the resulting action on the dual object of irreducible representations has uniformly bounded orbits. Also, the idea of quantum group dynamical systems yields new structural results on automorphism groups; indeed, for a large class of compact matrix quantum groups, \(\Aut_\chi (A)\) and \(\Aut(A)\) are compact Lie groups and \(\operatorname{Out}(A)\) is finite. The topology of \(\operatorname{Out}(A)\) is closely related to the problem of seeking compact matrix quantum groups with infinitely generated fusion rings. The authors show that finite generation of the fusion ring for a compact quantum group implies that the outer automorphism group \(\operatorname{Out}(A)\) is discrete. In ths classical setting, this suffices to imply that all compact linear Lie groups have discrete outer automorphism groups. However, in the last part of the paper, the authors provide two methods of constructing compact matrix quantum groups with infinitely generated fusion rings, showing sharp contrast to the classical case. Still, in spite of such examples, for general compact matrix quantum groups, the authors also show that \(\operatorname{Out}(A)\) is discrete, which coincides with the classical situation.
