Let \(\mathfrak{e}\) be a compact plane set with positive logarithmic capacity \(C(\mathfrak{e})\) and regular in the sense of potential theory. If \(T_n\) denotes the \(n\)-Chebyshev polynomial of \(\mathfrak{e}\), i.e. the unique polynomial minimizing the sup-norm on \(\mathfrak{e}\) among all monic polynomials of degree \(n\), then the corresponding sup-norms \(t_n\) satisfy \(t_n \ge 2\, C(\mathfrak{e})^n\). With \(B_{\mathfrak{e}}\) denoting the canonical Blaschke product for \(\mathfrak{e}\) and \(\chi_{\mathfrak{e}}\) the canonical character of the fundamental group of the complement \(\Omega\) of \(\mathfrak{e}\) with respect to the Riemann sphere, the Widom-minimizers \(F_n:=F_{\chi_{\mathfrak{e}}^n}\) are defined on the universal cover \(\widetilde{\Omega}\) of \(\Omega\). With these notions, the sequence \((T_n)\) is said to have strong Szegő-Widom asymptotics, if \(n \mapsto ||F_n||_\infty\) is almost periodic, \(n \mapsto F_n(z)\) is almost periodic uniformly on compact subsets of \(\widetilde{\Omega}\) and \[ \frac{T_n(z)B_{\mathfrak{e}}(z)^n}{C(\mathfrak{e})^n} -F_n(z) \to 0 \] uniformly on compact subsets of \(\widetilde{\Omega}\). In the main theorem it is shown that for regular compact sets \(\mathfrak{e}\subset \mathbb{R}\) which obey the so-called Parreau-Widom (PW) and Direct Cauchy Theorem (DCT) conditions the sequence \((T_n)\) has strong Szegő-Widom asymptotics, and that \[ t_n \sim 2 \, C(\mathfrak{e})^n ||F_n||_\infty. \] In two further main results, sufficient conditions for \(\mathfrak{e} \subset \mathbb{C}\) being a PW set and for a PW set being a DCT set, respectively, are given.
