The authors study the \( L_\infty \) optimal control problem for SISO continuous-time systems. The main result of the paper is that this problem always has a minimizing solution and that the optimal closed-loop system has a special structure: a finite or infinite sum of delayed step functions all having the same amplitude. Although the optimal controller has in general, non-rational transfer function, it is shown that in some special cases it can be found by solving a set of algebraic equations, otherwise the approximation methods developed by the authors [IEEE Trans. Autom. Control 41, 1358-1363 (1996; Zbl 0866.93015)] can be used.
