      Let \(R\) be a prime ring with extended centroid \(C\) and symmetric Martindale quotient ring \(Q\). Let the Lie ring of derivations of \(Q\) be \(\text{Der }Q\), and set \(D(R)=\{d\in\text{Der }Q\mid I^d\subseteq R\) for some nonzero ideal \(I\) of \(R\}\). Assuming \(\text{char }R=p>0\), let \(L\) be a finite dimensional (right) \(C\)-subspace of \(D(R)\) closed under Lie commutation and \(p\)th powers, and let \(R^L=\{x\in R\mid x^d=0\), all \(d\in L\}\). The purpose of the paper is to study conditions when \(R^L\) a PI ring forces \(R\) to satisfy a PI. Assume that \(\{d\in L\mid d=[\;,q]=\text{ad}(q)\}\neq 0\), and let \(B(L)\), the subalgebra of \(Q\) generated over \(C\) by \(\{q\in Q\mid\text{ad}(q)\in L\}\). The main results in the paper show that if \(B(L)\) is a quasi-Frobenius algebra over \(C\), and if \(R^L\) is a PI ring, then \(R\) satisfies a generalized polynomial identity. If in addition \(R^L\) is a semiprime ring, then \(R\) satisfies a PI.
