Let \(D\) be the open unit disc in the complex plane. \textit{J. Agler} [Some interpolation theorems of Nevanlinna-Pick type, J. Functional Analysis, to appear] has shown that there exists a holomorphic function \(F:D^2\to \overline{D}\) mapping \(n\) given points of \(D^2\) to \(n\) given points of \(D\) if, and only if, a certain matrix equation can be satisfied by a pair of \(n\times n\) positive semidefinite matrices \(A^{(1)}\), \(A^{(2)}\). However, this matrix problem seems intractable when \(n>2\). Taking \(n=3\), the author obtains an explicit solution to the modified matrix problem in which one or other of \(A^{(1)}\), \(A^{(2)}\) is required to have first row and column zero. She also derives further information about the case \(n=2\).
