The authors describe a method to improve scattered data approximations based on a ``refinement'' procedure of the original data's Delaunay triangulation. Piecewise linear, bivariate scattered data approximations of a \(C^0\) nature often suffer from the fact that the Delaunay triangulation of a 2D point set contains ``long,'' ``skinny'' triangles on its boundary. This also leads to relatively higher errors close to the boundary of the triangulation. The described method is based on point insertion in areas on the boundary where large errors results from ``skinny'' triangles. New points (with associated function values) are inserted to reduce the error of a linear spline approximant.
