Let \(A\) be a Banach or associative algebra, and let \(X\) be an \(A\)-bimodule. A linear mapping \(\Delta: A\to X\) is a local derivation if for every \(x\in A\), there exists a derivation \(D_x: A\to X\), depending on \(x\), satisfying \(\Delta(x) = D_x (x)\). When \(X\) is taken to be \(A\), such a local derivation is called a local derivation on \(A\).\N\NGiven \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), the Witt algebra \(W_n\) of vector fields on an \(n\)-dimensional torus is the derivation Lie algebra of the Laurent polynomial algebra \(A_n=\mathbb{C}[t_1^{\pm1},t_2^{\pm1},\ldots, t_n^{\pm1}]\). Furthermore, for \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), there exists the Witt (Lie) algebra \(W_n^+=\text{Der}(\mathbb{C}[t_1 ,t_2 ,\dots, t_n])\), which is a subalgebra of \(W_n\). Denote \(\mathfrak{h}\) as the Cartan subalgebra of \(W_n\), which is also a (non-unique) Cartan subalgebra of \(W_n^+\). One can write \(W_n^+= {\sum_{\alpha\in \mathbb{Z}_+^n}} t^\alpha \mathfrak{h}+ {\sum_{i=1}^n} \mathbb{C} t_i^{-1} d_i\), which has a subalgebra \(W_n^{++}= {\sum_{\alpha\in \mathbb{Z}_+^n}} t^\alpha \mathfrak{h}\). The algebra \(W_n^+\) is simple, but \(W_n^{++}\) is not.\NThe authors prove that every local derivation on Witt algebras \(W_n, W_n^+\) or \(W_n^{++} \) is a derivation for any \(n\in\mathbb{N}\) (Theorem 3.1, page 1162 and Theorem 4.1, page 1171). As a consequence the authors obtain that every local derivation on a centerless generalized Virasoro algebra of higher rank is a derivation (Corollary 3.8, page 1170).
