The paper studies the compatibility problem for finite groups. Two groups \(L_1\) and \(L_2\) are called compatible if there exists a finite group \(G\) with isomorphic normal subgroups \(N_1\) and \(N_2\) such that \(L_1 \cong G/N_1\) and \(L_2 \cong G/N_2\). The authors introduce Sims pairs and witness systems and use these notions to derive new necessary conditions for compatibility.\N\NThe paper proves that compatible groups have compatible subnormal series. It then develops stronger criteria in the presence of nonabelian simple subnormal subgroups, showing that under suitable hypotheses one can factor out isomorphic nontrivial normal subgroups from the two groups and preserve compatibility of the resulting quotients.\N\NA main results shows that compatible groups with no abelian composition factors have compatible normal series.
