The paper is concerned with continued fractions corresponding to quotients of Heine's hypergeometric series. After having taken note of sundry existence requirements, set \(Q(\omega) = 1-q^ \omega\), \([\alpha\mid n] = \prod Q(\alpha+\omega)\) \([0\leq \omega < n]\), \([\alpha,\beta:\gamma\mid n] = [\alpha\mid n][\beta\mid n]/[\gamma\mid n][1\mid n]\), \({\phi(\alpha,\beta:\gamma\| z)=}\sum[\alpha,\beta:\gamma\mid n]z^ n\) \([0\leq n < \infty]\) and \(R(\alpha,\beta:\gamma\| z) = \phi(\alpha,\beta:\gamma\| z)/\phi(\alpha,\beta+1:\gamma+1\| z)\). Denote the convergents of the continued fraction \(b(0)-a(1)/b(1)-a(2)/b(2)-\dots\) by \(C(\omega)\), so that \(C(0)=b(0)\) etc. With \(a(\omega)=Q(\beta+\omega)Q(\gamma- \alpha+\omega)z'/Q(\gamma+\omega-1)Q(\gamma+ \omega)\) \((\omega > 0)\) and \(b(\omega) = 1+Q(\beta - \alpha + \omega + 1)z'/Q(\gamma+\omega)\) \((\omega\geq 0)\) where \(z' = q^{\alpha-1}z\), the series expansion of \(C(\omega)\) in ascending powers of \(z\) agrees with that of \(R(\alpha,\beta:\gamma\| z)\) as far as the term in \(z^ \omega\), while the expansion in descending powers of \(z\) (it begins with a term in \(z^ 1\)) agrees with that of \(Q(\beta-\alpha + 1)z'R(1-\alpha,\gamma- \alpha:\beta-\alpha+1\| q/z)/Q(\gamma)\) as far as the term in \(z^{1- \omega}\). The authors also consider independently the connection between the above continued fraction with \(a(\omega) = Q(\alpha+\omega- 1)Q(\gamma-\beta+\omega-1)z''/Q(\gamma+\omega-1)Q(\gamma+\omega)\) \((\omega > 0)\), \(b(0) = 1\) and \(b(\omega) = 1 + Q(\alpha-\beta+\omega- 1)z''/Q(\gamma+\omega)\) \((\omega > 0)\), where \(z'' = q^ \beta z\), and further power series. However, apart from the first term \(b(0)\), which causes discrepancies in agreement involving \(z^ 1\), the theory of the second expansion may be derived from that of the first simply by interchanging \(\alpha\) and \(\beta+1\). The coefficients of the continued fraction concerned are in closed form; standard convergence results are applied. By replacing \(z\) by \(q^ \gamma z\), effecting various equivalence transformations and letting \(q^ \gamma\) increase indefinitely, or otherwise, one may obtain formulae free of \(\gamma\); further special forms are obtained in the same way. They are treated as in the general case. (There is a mistake in the authors' eqn. (2.17): their \(bq^ 2\) should be replaced by \(bq^ 2/a\).).
