Hilbert polynomial of a certain ladder-determinantal ideal (Q686985)

The author gives by combinatorial techniques (``lattice path counting'') an explicit polynomial expression for the Hilbert function of the ideal generated by the \(2\times 2\) minors of a ladder-type order of indeterminates in a corresponding polynomial ring. The restriction on \(2\times 2\) minors is essential. This also yields a constructive proof of the well-known hilbertianness of this determinantal ideal.
