In this article, the authors prove the existence of a lot of new self-dual linear codes over finite fields \(\mathbb{F}_q\). The codes found are obtained from maximal curves (given the genus) and hyperelliptic curves over \(\mathbb{F}_q\). Key tools in the constructions are results by \textit{L. Sok} [Des. Codes Cryptography 89, No. 5, 823--841 (2021; Zbl 1469.94144)] and \textit{H. Stichtenoth} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 55, No. 1-2, 199--211 (1988; Zbl 0654.94017)], respectively. These, and other tools and concepts, are presented and explained in Section 2 of the paper, after an instructive introduction. \N\NSection 3 is the main body of the paper. Here, the authors prove the existence of the many self-dual codes in question. We remark that whenever Lemma 2.5 (obtained from the last part of (i) of [\textit{L. Sok}, Des. Codes Cryptography 89, No. 5, 823--841 (2021; Zbl 1469.94144)], Lemma 5) is used, it is not \(C_{\mathcal{L}}(D,G)\) that is the desired self-dual code, but a slightly bigger code \(C'\) containing it.
