Let \(G\) be a real reductive group with differentiated Cartan involution \(\theta\) and Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{g}_0\). For a \(\theta\)-stable parabolic subalgebra \(\mathfrak{q} = \mathfrak{l} \oplus \mathfrak{u}\) of the complexification \(\mathfrak{g}\) and \(\mathbb{C}_{\lambda}\) a character of the Levi subgroup \(L\) of \(\mathfrak{q}\) we can define \(A_{\mathfrak{q}}(\lambda)\) as a cohomologically induced module. These modules exhaust the unitary representations of \(G\) when the infinitesimal character is real, integral and strongly regular, but when the infinitesimal character is singular, the situation is less well understood. However, the \(A_{\mathfrak{q}}(\lambda)\) modules still provide a long list of unitary modules.\N\N\NThe author studies these modules for the group \(G = U(p,q)\). \textit{D. A. Vogan jun.} [Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 61, 219--243 (1997; Zbl 0890.22009)] conjectured that in this case, the modules \(A_{\mathfrak{q}}(\lambda)\) include all the unitary modules with integral infinitesimal characters.\NNow the \(A_{\mathfrak{q}}(\lambda)\) are either irreducible or zero for \(\lambda\) in the so-called weakly fair range. Therefore, the author wants to establish a non-vanishing criterion using an algorithm developed by \textit{P. E. Trapa} [Compos. Math. 129, No. 1, 1--45 (2001; Zbl 0987.22011)], making use of Young tableaux which identify annihilators and asymptotic supports paramatrizing the modules \(A_{\mathfrak{q}}(\lambda)\). Trapa [loc. cit.] introduces the definitions of overlap and singularity for these Young tableaux, but these are quite hard to calculate. In the paper, the author proves a formula for the overlap which becomes quite simple for \(\lambda\) in the nice range, which is smaller than the weakly fair range. The author gives a non-vanishing criterion for \(A_{\mathfrak{q}}(\lambda)\) and proves that \(K\)-types of a particular highest weight must exist in \(A_{\mathfrak{q}}(\lambda)\) and gives a non-vanishing criterion for the Dirac index of \(A_{\mathfrak{q}}(\lambda)\).
