A log del Pezzo surface is a normal surface \(X\) with log terminal singularities such that \(-K_X\) is ample. The index of \(X\) is the smallest natural number \(i_X\) such that \(i_XK_X\) is ample. The classification of log del Pezzo surfaces of index 1 is a classical and well known result. Log del Pezzo surfaces of index 2 have been classified by \textit{V. Alexeev} and \textit{V. Nikulin} [Del Pezzo and \(K3\) surfaces. Tokyo: Mathematical Society of Japan. MSJ Memoirs 15 (2006; Zbl 1097.14001)]. In this paper the authors essentially follow the idea of the paper of Alexeev, Nikulin in order to classify log del Pezzo surfaces \(X\) of index three with the property that the linear system \(|-3K_X|\) contains a member of the form \(2C\) where \(C\) is a smooth curve which does not meet the singularities. The authors show that the triple cover of such \(X\) ramified along \(2C\) is birationally isomorphic to a smooth \(K3\) surface with an automorphism of order three. Conversely, if \(Y\) is a \(K3\) surface with an automorphism \(\phi\) of order three such that its fixed locus contains a curve of genus \(\geq 2\), then the quotient \(Y/(\phi)\) is birational to a log del Pezzo surface \(X\) of index three except for the case when \(S_Y^{\phi} \cong U(3)\), where \(S_Y\) is the Neron-Severi lattice of \(Y\). Moreover, the possible singularities of \(X\) are classified.
