An endomorphism \(g\) of a group \(G\) is called locally inner if \(g(x)\) is conjugate to \(x\) for every \(x\) in \(G\).\N\NThe main result of the paper states that every locally inner endomorphism is inner for a Chevalley group (or its elementary subgroup) over a local ring \(R\), with an irreducible root system \(\Phi\) of rank \(>1\) (with 1/2 in \(R\) for the systems \(\mathbf{A}_2\), \(\mathbf{F}_4\), \(\mathbf{B}_{\ell}\), \(\mathbf{C}_{\ell}\) and with \(1/3\) in \(R\) for the system \(\mathbf{G}_2\)). Thus, in the terminology of \textit{B. Kunyavskiĭ} [Expo. Math. 31, No. 3, 256--273 (2013; Zbl 1304.20049)] all these groups are \(\Sha\)-rigid, meaning that their Shafarevich-Tate set has only one element.\N\NThe main tool in the proof is a theorem obtained in a series of papers of the first author. It classifies homomorphisms between \(G(\Phi,R)\) and \(G(\Phi,S)\) (or between their elementary subgroups \(E(\Phi,R)\) and \(E(\Phi,S)\)), when \(S\) is a local ring like \(R\). This too makes it possible to break down the problem into cases such as the case of a diagonal automorphism or the case of a graph automorphism.
