Let \(\omega(n)\) be the number of distinct prime divisors of \(n\), with \(\omega(1)=0\). In the paper under review, the authors study average of the function \(f(n)\) defined by \(f(n)=2^{\omega(n)}\) for squareful integers \(n\geq 1\) and \(f(n)=0\) otherwise. More precisely, they show that there exist computable constants \(c_1, \dots, c_4\) such that\N\[\N\sum_{n\leq x}f(n)=c_1 x^{1/2}\log x+c_2 x^{1/2}+c_3x^{1/3}\log x+c_4 x^{1/3}+R(x),\N\]\Nand give approximations for \(R(x)\), both unconditionally and conditionally, under assuming the Riemann hypothesis. The proof is based on using Perron's formula, zero-free regions for the Riemann zeta function of Vinogradov-Korobov type, and classical complex integration running over delicate computations.
