The article provides a pedagogical introduction to the non-abelian Hodge correspondence, aimed at conveying underlying ideas and geometric intuition rather than technical completeness. The correspondence is presented as a unifying framework relating representations of surface groups, flat connections, and holomorphic objects, building on foundational work of Hitchin, Simpson, Corlette, and Donaldson.\N\NAfter motivating character varieties and reviewing the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence, the author develops background on connections, gauge theory, and symplectic geometry, including the Atiyah-Bott approach to the Goldman symplectic structure and the Poisson structure for surfaces with boundary. Stability conditions and moduli of holomorphic bundles are discussed in preparation for the sections on Higgs bundles and harmonic bundles.\N\NThe correspondence is then motivated via harmonic map theory and the Hitchin-Simpson equations, followed by a discussion of the induced hyperkähler structure. Applications to higher Teichmüller theory and directions for further research are briefly outlined.
