This paper studies locally bounded rational functions on non-singular irreducible real algebraic varieties. For a rational function \(f: X \dashrightarrow R\) on a non-singular irreducible real algebraic variety \(X\), the following are equivalent:\N\begin{itemize}\N\item \(f\) is locally bounded;\N\item For every semialgebraic continuous arc \(\gamma:[0,1] \to X\) with \(\gamma((0,1]) \subseteq \operatorname{dom}(f)\), \(f \circ \gamma\) is bounded;\N\item There exists a composition of blowups with smooth centers \(\varphi:\widetilde{X} \to X\) such that \(f \circ \varphi\) is regular.\N\end{itemize}\NIn this paper, basic geometric and algebraic results with respect to these functions are established with the aid of the above equivalence. For instance, the locus of indeterminacy of \(f\) is of codimension greater than or equal to two. The ring of locally bounded rational functions on \(R^n\) is not Noetherian for \(n>1\) and of Krull dimension \(n\). Under a modified definition of the zero set of \(f\), a version of Łojasiewicz inequality holds. (Under this definition, the zero set of \(f\) is semialgebraic, and it is not necessarily algebraic.) For every finitely generated ideals of the ring of locally bounded rational functions on \(R^2\), a version of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz holds.
