This paper concerns the so-called orbit space problem: if \(G\) is a compact group and if \(X\) is a \(G\)-ANR, is the orbit space \(X/G\) an ANR? It is a continuation of the earlier papers by the author [Topology Appl. 98, No. 1--3, 35--46 (1999; Zbl 0942.54011); ibid. 146--147, 289--315 (2005; Zbl 1072.54014); ibid. 153, No. 5--6, 698--709 (2005; Zbl 1099.54017); Fundam. Math. 205, No. 2, 117--145 (2009; Zbl 1184.54035)].\N\NThe author proves the following theorems:\N\N1) Let \(G\) be a locally compact group and \(X\) a proper \(G\)-space such that all \(G\)-orbits in \(X\) are metrizable. If \(X\) is a \(G\)-ANE, then \(X/G\) is an ANE.\N\N2) Let \(G\) be a locally compact almost connected group, \(H\) a closed normal subgroup of \(G\) and \(X\) a proper \(G\)-space that admits a paracompact orbit space \(X/G\). If \(X\) is a \(G\)-ANE such that all \(H\)-orbits in \(X\) are metrizable, then \(X/H\) is a \(G/H\)-ANE.\N\N3) Let \(G\) be a Lie group, \(H\) a closed normal subgroup of \(G\) and \(X\) a proper \(G\)-space. If \(X\) is a \(G\)-ANE, then \(X/H\) is a \(G/H\)-ANE.\N\N4) Let \(G\) be a locally compact group, \(H\) an almost connected normal subgroup of \(G\) and \(X\) a metrizable proper \(G\)-space that admits a compatible \(G\)-invariant metric. If \(X\) is a \(G\)-AE, then \(X/H\) is a \(G/H\)-AE.
