The authors consider mainly bivariate polynomials which are orthogonal on the unit disk. These bivariate orthogonal polynomials can be expressed in terms of special univariate polynomials. The aim of this research is a well-conditioned alternative to the radial basis interpolation on the unit disk. Using these bivariate orthogonal polynomials, the authors identify sets of interpolation points on the unit disk that guarantee a small Lebesgue constant and thus interpolants that are near-best polynomial approximants. The results are illustrated with numerical examples of polynomial approximation and interpolation on the unit disk and compared with the radial basis interpolation.
