This paper is a short review of previous results of the author and J. Ramis on nonintegrability criteria for complex analytic Hamiltonian systems through a generalization of the well-known theorem of Ziglin. The main theorem constructs necessary conditions for Liouville integrability of the original system and is obtained through an application of the Picard-Vessiot theory to the linear system of variational equations around a certain solution. The theorem is also extended to the higher-order variational equations and the nonintegrability of an ambiguous case of the Hénon/Heiles system is proved as an application.
