It is known that a locally compact group is metrizable if all of its dense subspaces are separable. The authors provide an example showing that this statement in general fails if one replaces ``subspaces'' with ``subgroups''. On the other hand, they identify classes of locally compact groups for which the modified statement does hold. For example, connected compact groups, abelian compact groups and locally compact groups whose subgroups are all separable. With the goal of finding classes for which one gets a positive answer, the strategy outlined in the paper is the following: Find a class \(\mathcal C\) of locally compact groups satisfying the following property: every group \(G\in\mathcal C\) admits a dense subgroup \(H\) such that \(d(H)=w(G)\). Here, \(d(H)\) denotes the minimum cardinal \(\tau\) such that \(H\) admits a dense subset of size \(\tau\) and \(w(G)\) is the weight of \(G\). The authors conjecture that the class of compact groups must have the desired property to make the strategy work.
