The paper at hand deals derives parametrized finite element methods for general anisotropic surface diffusion of curves in 2d and surfaces in 3d that uses implicit-explicit Euler time stepping. The schemes are provably structure preserving in the sense that the total enclosed volume is conserved and the total surface energy is non-increasing in time. This is achieved by defining a novel surface energy matrix and deriving a unified and conservative variational formulation for anisotropic surface diffusion.
